1. At the Scene of the Crash
The first few minutes after a wreck are chaotic, but they are crucial for your case. Your priority is safety. Once you are safe, you need to collect evidence.
- Call 911: In Oklahoma City, police may not respond to minor accidents during bad weather, but always try. A police report is the best neutral evidence.
- Photos: Take pictures of the damage to ALL vehicles, skid marks, and traffic signs.
- Witnesses: Get names and phone numbers. They might leave before police arrive.

2. Seek Medical Attention Immediately
Some injuries are not obvious right away. You may have a concussion, whiplash, or internal bleeding without realizing it. Go to an ER or urgent care immediately. Prompt evaluation protects your health and documents the timing of your symptoms.

3. Dealing with Insurance Adjusters
Insurance note: The other driver's insurance adjuster represents the insurer, not you. Recorded statements, broad medical releases, and early settlement offers can affect the claim before the full record is known.
- Consider attorney review before giving a recorded statement.
- Do not sign a broad medical release unless you understand what records it authorizes.
- Evaluate early settlement offers against the full medical and damages record.
If counsel is involved, route insurance communications through that attorney.

4. Statute of Limitations
In Oklahoma, you generally have two years from the date of the accident to file a lawsuit (Title 12 O.S. § 95). Missing a filing deadline can make a claim time-barred, and shorter or different deadlines can apply. Attorney review should confirm the deadline for the specific case.
